Strictly native to North America the majestic bald eagle can be found in every state of the continental US with the most populous areas found in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes region, Chesapeake Bay area and Florida. The bald eagle was chosen as the national symbol of the United States as it was thought to represent strength, longevity and a majestic quality. Bald eagles are drawn to areas near oceans, rivers, lakes and swamps with fish being the main component of the bald eagles diet although it does feed on rodents, snakes, turtles, smaller birds and dead animals as well. Bald eagles prefer tall trees for nesting and roosting. When attempting to view these truly majestic creatures it is best to do so from a vehicle or from cover as eagles can be easily startled and chased from their roost. In some parts of the country where high populations of eagles exist, manned observation decks provide a safe experience for man and bird. Bald eagles can often be seen hunting for fish as well as teaching their young to the skills of hunting. Viewing the beautiful bald eagle can be a truly moving experience for the avid bird-watcher.
